Career LadderMake a job plan 

 In order to successfully get a promotion you must have a good idea of what you want to achieve. Decide not only where next, you want to be, but speculate on the career upgrades you hope to achieve in the next 10 years

Place your goal in a context that can fit into the culture and aims of your employers business. You are likely to get a good promotion if your career plan matches with the scope of your employer's business. 

Choose your company wisely  

 Statistically, the chances of promotion are higher in expanding rather than declining industries. Any employer would find it more comfortable to promote an existing employee than hire a new one. So choose a company where you can expect good growth opportunities in the long run. Once you're inside an organization, you can even move up by merely being there and proving that you are eligible for the next promotion. 

Prove your capability for the post 

 Before accepting new responsibilities, evaluate the promotion potential in it. Only you can decide if accepting the new work pile is a fast-track way to learn things you need to move ahead or merely more of the same for which avoidance would be a better strategy.

But remember no one will promote an employee who drifts through their job all day. So, if you have been doing overtime, putting in extra effort, or offering suggestions, then you stand a much better chance.

Develop your PR skills 

 Select the people you feel could help you in achieving your goals. Subtly spread the word that you are an achiever and could handle new responsibilities. Interacting with others will widen your knowledge about the other departments and also give you inside information that could help maintain an edge over others. Your colleagues' positive recommendations could further enhance your image in your superior's eye. 

Train your replacement 

 Select a potential replacement who could take over your responsibilities once you are promoted. If there is no one to replace you, chances are that your bosses would think twice before shifting you from that position. 

Learn your boss's work 

 If the next promotion you are eyeing for happens to be your boss's seat, you have to handle the situation tactfully. Discuss openly with your boss about your future plans. Show your eagerness to learn and gradually pick up all the finer details of the work.

However, take extra care to assure your boss that you do not intend to threaten his position but rather expect him to climb up in the corporate ladder.
